The Playdate is a unique handheld console, famous for its built-in crank that developers use for creative in-game controls. However, a new policy from developer Panic Inc. means that games utilizing generative AI will no longer be accepted into the Playdate Catalog store.
Defining generative AI for Panic Inc.
According to an announcement on the Catalog developer blog, the ban covers the use of AI for art, audio, music, text, or dialogue. Panic Inc. has provided a specific breakdown of what constitutes prohibited technology:
- Large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT, DeepSeek, and Google Gemini.
- AI-based image generation models like Stable Diffusion, DALL-E, and Midjourney.
- AI-based audio generation models including MuseNet, Suno, and Udio.
Rules for existing and upcoming titles
While the policy is strict regarding assets, it isn't a total ban on all machine learning. The announcement clarifies that custom-written functions, such as enemy AI, are still perfectly acceptable for development.
For games already listed on the Catalog store, the transition will be transparent. Any existing titles that used generative AI during their creation will remain available, but they will be "flagged as such" with a detailed explanation of how the technology was implemented.
Encouraging human collaboration
Panic Inc. is encouraging developers to seek out human talent rather than relying on automated tools. In their statement, the company noted: "There are lots of people in the world who are extremely eager and excited to create beautiful music, art, and words for your Playdate creation."
If creators struggle to find help, they can check out the collaborations channel in the Playdate Squad Discord or visit the official developer forum.
The debate over AI in gaming remains divisive. A survey from earlier this year suggested that 50% of game developers believe its inclusion is detrimental to the industry, even as some investors push for its adoption. While budget and time constraints often make automated tools tempting for small-scale developers on niche hardware, it is officially a no-go for the console-with-a-crank.
