While details regarding Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic remain scarce, we finally have some clarity on The Odyssey runtime. Fans of the director's recent work can breathe a sigh of relief: his next massive project will not be quite as long as Oppenheimer.

Nolan’s previous blockbuster biopic clocked in at three hours, a length that tested the endurance of even the most dedicated cinephiles. However, producer Emma Thomas confirmed at CinemaCon 2026 that The Odyssey will officially come in under that three-hour mark. While the exact duration is still unknown due to ongoing post-production, Thomas has guaranteed it won't reach the same grueling length as his last outing.

Speculation Surrounding The Odyssey Runtime

The expected length of the film has become a major talking point among enthusiasts. Given the massive amount of story beats contained within Homer’s original saga, many believe Nolan will have to trim significant portions of the source material. Despite this, Nolan is known for maintaining a fast-paced narrative style. Some fans have already begun joking that the film's length will land at exactly two hours, 59 minutes, and 59 seconds.

Described as a "mythic action epic," the film was captured using cutting-edge IMAX film technology on locations across the globe. The star-studded cast includes:

  • Matt Damon as Odysseus, the legendary King of Ithaca.
  • Tom Holland as Telemachus, Odysseus's determined son.
  • Anne Hathaway as Penelope, the concerned wife of Odysseus.
  • Jon Bernthal as Menelaus, the Greek King of Sparta.

Matt Damon on Filming the Mythic Epic

The production has clearly been a physical and mental gauntlet for the cast. Matt Damon recently shared that the experience had a "profound" effect on him, noting that he enjoyed the challenge despite the constant discomfort.

To prepare for the role, Damon underwent a massive physical transformation. Speaking on the New Heights podcast with Jason and Travis Kelce, he revealed that Nolan required him to be both lean and strong.

"I lost a lot of weight," Damon said, noting he had maintained a beard for nearly a year during the process. "If I look objectively at what was required to do that job, I think it came at just the right time in my life."

The High Stakes of Nolan's 13th Film

As Christopher Nolan’s 13th feature film, expectations are sky-high. He follows a legendary career trajectory including Inception, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Interstellar, and Oppenheimer. Following the massive $975 million success of Oppenheimer, which dominated both the box office and the Academy Awards, the momentum behind this project is unprecedented.

Demand for The Odyssey is already visible; a limited number of tickets went on sale as early as last summer, a full year before the scheduled release.

The Odyssey arrives in theaters on July 17, 2026.
