A talented composer has recently remade the entire soundtrack of the first Elder Scrolls game, bringing a much-needed modern touch to a legendary RPG. Ryan Zachariah Martin (YouTube, Bandcamp) has taken it upon himself to reimagine the music from The Elder Scrolls: Arena, releasing his work across various platforms including Spotify.
The Technical Struggles of the 1994 Original
The Elder Scrolls: Arena was the foundation of the series, featuring an OST composed by Eric Heberling, who would later handle audio duties for The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall. Because the game shipped in 1994 on MS-DOS, Heberling’s orchestral-style compositions faced significant technological hurdles.
Heberling had to compress his work to fit the era's hardware, a limitation he discussed in a 2011 interview. "The Elder Scrolls games used an 'orchestrally' palette," said Heberling. "I mainly used the instruments offered by General MIDI. That said, I composed with a Roland Sound Canvas, when few players owned anything remotely similar."
He noted that because he had to convert tracks for FM Sound Blasters, many arrangements suffered. He explained that tracks relying on the specific timbre of GM samples were particularly affected, though those reinforced with counter-melodies fared better.
A New Way to Hear the Soundtrack Remade for the First Elder Scrolls Game
More than 30 years later, Martin’s project allows these compositions to finally break free from their original technological constraints. For Martin, the project is deeply personal. "Arena has always been a game that I hold close to my heart," Martin tells PCG.
He discovered the series by working backward from Morrowind and felt an immediate connection to the game's scope. Martin believes it is vital for fans of the franchise to hear this modernised version, especially since the original tracks share many motifs with the Daggerfall soundtrack.
During his reconstruction of the score, Martin focused on several key elements:
- Oversnow: A track featuring beautiful, layered crescendos and gorgeously re-done counter-melodies.
- Character Creation: A challenging piece that attempts to recapture a unique tribal and orchestral mix.
- The Intro Theme: A rendition that emphasizes the beauty and simplicity of the original melodies rather than pure bombast.
Capturing the Retro-RPG Vibe
Martin’s work is more than just a technical update; it is an attempt to preserve a specific feeling. He notes that his version of the remade entire soundtrack of the first Elder Scrolls game perfectly fits a "retro-RPG vibe."
According to Martin, the music "has many similar motifs and elements" to later entries, and he aims to use modern software to highlight those qualities. He believes the score "really gives you a sense of wonder and adventure," helping players fully immerse themselves in the world of Tamriel.
Listening to the new version, the 1990s stylings are undeniable. The music captures that era's grandeur, featuring everything from eerie, atmospheric dungeon tracks to powerful orchestral pieces for the intro and outro. It is a nostalgic trip that feels like stepping back into a classic era of PC gaming.
