Ubisoft's Free-to-Play Division Shooter is Coming to Steam

Ubisoft's free-to-play shooter The Division Resurgence is set to arrive on Steam later this year, marking another intriguing development in the game’s evolving journey. Initially announced in 2022 with a planned 2024 release, the game faced multiple delays and finally launched in March 2026. Just a month after its debut, it quietly entered early access on PC, allowing for technical testing ahead of its official August release.

The move to PC came as a surprise to many. As PC Gamer's Shaun Prescott noted, there were no indications at the time that Ubisoft had plans to bring The Division Resurgence beyond mobile platforms. In fact, the company emphasized its focus on mobile, stating, "Our objective in bringing the Division universe to mobile, is to enable more people worldwide to enjoy this open world experience whenever and wherever they want. We feel very lucky that the mobile market has evolved to the point where we can develop such an ambitious game."

Despite this initial focus, Ubisoft decided to expand the game's reach, much like Blizzard did with Diablo Immortal. Now, just over a month after launching on Ubisoft's own storefront, The Division Resurgence is available for wishlisting on Steam. The development team shared, "Over the next few weeks we will be hard at work polishing the last elements of the game for a truly seamless experience, whatever your preferred platform may be. The game is fully cross-platform and cross-play, meaning you can continue your journey in The Division at any time."

Why Steam?

The decision to bring The Division Resurgence to Steam just a month after its PC launch raises questions. While Ubisoft hasn't officially explained its reasoning, it's no secret that Steam remains a dominant force in the PC gaming space. Much like the rest of the industry, Ubisoft returned to Steam in 2024, signaling a renewed interest in the platform. Whether this move is a strategic attempt to maximize exposure or simply a way to refine the game further, it's clear that Ubisoft sees Steam as a key avenue for success.

  • Cross-platform support ensures players can jump between devices seamlessly.
  • Early access on PC allowed for technical testing and feedback.
  • Steam’s influence may have played a role in Ubisoft's decision to bring the game to the platform.
