Facepunch Studios' new game creation platform, s&box, is set to release on April 28 on Steam. Built using Valve's Source Engine 2, the platform serves as a physics sandbox and toolkit designed to be the spiritual successor to Garry's Mod. A core pillar of this launch is the studio's commitment to supporting s&box game developers through direct financial rewards.

Supporting Creators: $500,000 Paid Out So Far

Leading up to the launch, Facepunch Studios has highlighted a community-forward vision that prioritizes fairness over corporate growth. The studio has already paid out over $500,000 to creators on the platform.

Facepunch maintains that this financial model is built to last. "This isn't as extreme as others but it'll grow and is sustainable, since we don't have to fire 1000 people to keep it working," the studio stated. Unlike many larger corporations, Facepunch claims they are not guided by commercial milestones or the need for an IPO.

How "The Play Fund" Works for s&box Game Developers

The revenue for these creators is distributed through a dedicated pool known as "The Play Fund." While the fund currently relies on profits from Garry's Mod, Facepunch intends for the platform to eventually become self-sufficient.

Key details regarding monetization include:

  • Funds are distributed among developers with the most popular games and maps.
  • The studio takes no royalties or hidden percentages from creators.
  • Developers retain full control over their work, including the ability to remove it from the platform.

Full Control and Steam Integration

One of the most significant advantages for s&box game developers is the ability to take their work beyond the sandbox. Thanks to a specific deal struck with Valve, games created within s&box can be exported as standalone titles on Steam.

"We don't ask for any royalties for this. No hidden percentages, no rug pulls, your work is yours," Facepunch stated. "This means that if you make a popular game on our platform, you're not stuck—if you can make it standalone, you should."

Facepunch Studios CEO Garry Newman believes this ecosystem creates a rising tide for everyone involved. "We're trying to give people the same chances that we've had… we do everything not for ourselves, but for the community," says Newman. "By elevating the community, we elevate ourselves naturally. We have faith in that because that's what happened to us. Everyone can win."
