Wake Up Samurai — Keanu Reeves Carves Out Lead Role in Japanese Stop-Motion 'Wood Sculpture' Film Hidari

Keanu Reeves is officially stepping into the world of high-concept stop-motion animation. The actor has been cast in the lead role for Hidari, a Japanese "wood sculpture" samurai film that has transitioned from a viral internet sensation to a major international production.

The project first captured the world's attention via a proof-of-concept video released on YouTube in 2023. That initial glimpse featured stunning stop-motion action, characters crafted entirely from wood, and even a massive wooden mech. After amassing over 4.9 million views, director Masashi Kawamura has successfully moved the project toward a full-length feature.

From Viral Concept to Major Production

The journey of Hidari is nothing short of cinematic magic. Originally a short concept, the film has gained significant momentum through various channels:

  • Kickstarter Success: Raised over $100,000 to fund its development.
  • Industry Recognition: Featured in the prestigious Annecy Animation Showcase.
  • Global Collaboration: Co-developed by Kawamura’s studio, Whatever, alongside acclaimed stop-motion specialists dwarf studios and Tecarat.

Reeves will voice the protagonist, Hidari Jingoro, a man described as being "consumed by revenge yet unable to abandon his instinct to create." While Reeves is no stranger to voice work—having voiced Shadow in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Duke Caboom in Toy Story 4—this marks his first role in an original Japanese production.

A Tale of Revenge, Rebirth, and Wood Carving

Set against the backdrop of Edo-period Japan, the film blends historical figures with original lore. The story follows Jingoro, a master craftsman caught in a massive conspiracy during the reconstruction of Edo Castle. After losing his mentor, his lover, and his right arm, Jingoro undergoes a radical transformation.

The narrative explores several unique themes:

  • Weaponized Artistry: Jingoro replaces his lost limb with a prosthetic weapon, turning his carving tools into instruments of death.
  • Political Intrigue: Power struggles within the shogunate and advancing mechanical soldiers threaten the peace.
  • Personal Redemption: A journey that shifts from pure destruction to a search for the meaning of life.

The Connection to John Wick

Director Masashi Kawamura admitted that securing Reeves was a dream come true, noting that John Wick served as a stylistic reference during the creation of the pilot. "When I made my own personal dream list of actors... the very first name I wrote down was Keanu Reeves," Kawamura stated, adding that having the actor on board feels "surreal."

Reeves expressed similar enthusiasm for the project's vision, noting that the team has created something "extraordinary" that has the potential to reach audiences worldwide. As he prepares for a busy slate including BRZRKR and John Wick 5, this stylized Hidari adventure adds a unique, handcrafted layer to his legendary career.
