Keanu Reeves is officially stepping into the world of high-concept stop-motion animation. The actor has been cast in the lead role for Hidari, a Japanese "wood sculpture" samurai film that has transitioned from a viral internet sensation to a major international production.
The project first captured the world's attention via a proof-of-concept video released on YouTube in 2023. That initial glimpse featured stunning stop-motion action, characters crafted entirely from wood, and even a massive wooden mech. After amassing over 4.9 million views, director Masashi Kawamura has successfully moved the project toward a full-length feature.
From Viral Concept to Major Production
The journey of Hidari is nothing short of cinematic magic. Originally a short concept, the film has gained significant momentum through various channels:

The story follows Jingoro, a master craftsman caught in a massive conspiracy during the reconstruction of Edo Castle.
