Fans of Larian Studios’ hit RPG are in for a massive treat, as it has been confirmed that an Astarion prequel novel is officially in development. Penguin Random House recently announced an expansive new publishing program celebrating Baldur's Gate 3, which has seen over 15 million players since its 2023 launch. The initiative aims to bring the game’s immersive world and unforgettable characters to readers through a variety of new formats.

Details on the Astarion Prequel Novel and New Releases

The centerpiece of this announcement is Baldur’s Gate 3: Astarion, written by award-winning, New York Times bestselling fantasy author T. Kingfisher. Scheduled for release on September 29, 2026, this Astarion prequel novel follows the beloved character during his years in servitude to the vampire lord Cazador Szarr leading up to the game's events.

To ensure the story remains true to the established lore, senior Baldur’s Gate 3 writer Stephen Rooney was consulted during the writing process. For those who prefer listening, Penguin Random House Audio will release an audiobook narrated by Neil Newbon, the acclaimed actor behind Astarion's voice and performance capture in the game.

More Baldur's Gate 3 Books Coming Soon

Beyond the main novel, several other items are available for preorder on Amazon:

  • The Necromancy of Thay: Published by Clarkson Potter on July 21, 2026, this is a "faithful reproduction" of the in-game quest item. It serves as a grid-paper notebook featuring an embossed skull and foil stamping.
  • The Official Baldur's Gate 3 Coloring Book: Releasing August 11, 2026, via Ten Speed Press, this book features 40 black-and-white illustrations by Jaki King.
  • A Feast for a Tenday: The Official Baldur’s Gate Cookbook: Published on November 3, 2026, by Andrew Wheeler, this collection includes 65 recipes, including dishes marked as "romanceable."

The Future of the Baldur's Gate Universe

While Larian has moved on to work on brand new titles, including the Divinity universe, the Baldur's Gate franchise continues to grow. Penguin Random House plans to continue its publishing initiative into 2027, with more details expected later this year.

However, not all news has been met with universal praise. HBO is currently working on a Baldur’s Gate 3 TV show set after the events of the game. Some fans are hesitant about the concept, given how much the game's many different endings and character outcomes—such as those for Karlach and Shadowheart—can alter the world state.

The expansion doesn't stop with books and television. Hasbro is also planning a video game follow-up to Baldur’s Gate 3. While it remains to be seen if this will be a direct sequel or something entirely different, these upcoming publications will certainly give fans plenty to enjoy in the meantime.
