A massive bidding war has erupted over the rights for the upcoming Battlefield movie. According to a new report from The Wrap, five major Hollywood studios are currently competing to secure the project. The heavy hitters in the race include Netflix, Warner Bros., Sony, Universal, and Amazon MGM.

The Hollywood Reporter initially revealed that Mission: Impossible director Christopher McQuarrie has been developing the film. Additionally, Michael B. Jordan is on board to produce and potentially star in the production. The filmmaking team and EA are currently shopping the project around Hollywood to find the ideal studio partner.

The Race for the Battlefield Movie Rights

While a theatrical release is a top priority for the project, the involvement of streaming giants adds an interesting layer to the competition. Although The Hollywood Reporter noted that Netflix might not be the primary candidate for a theatrical-first approach, the streamer is actively trying to expand its cinematic presence.

Netflix has several upcoming theatrical milestones, including:

  • The release of Greta Gerwig’s first Narnia film in IMAX later this year.
  • The success of KPop Demon Hunters at the box office last year.
  • Previous commitments to release Warner Bros. films in theaters (though their merger offer was eventually abandoned).

Because of this, Netflix may offer the Battlefield movie a theatrical release as a concession to McQuarram.

Studio Connections and Gaming Pedigree

Warner Bros. and Amazon MGM are also strong contenders due to their existing relationships with Michael B. Jordan. Warner Bros. saw massive success with Sinners this past year, which earned Jordan his first Oscar win. Meanwhile, Amazon MGM has a long history of backing Jordan through the Creed franchise.

The competition is further complicated by potential industry shifts:

  • A looming merger between Warner Bros. and Paramount could see the Battlefield movie sharing a home with the upcoming 2028 Call of Duty film.
  • Amazon MGM is currently working with Jordan on a new take on The Thomas Crown Affair, set for release next March.

Sony remains a powerhouse in the industry, specifically regarding gaming adaptations. Through PlayStation Productions, Sony is already managing an impressive slate of projects, including:

  • Resident Evil (directed by Zach Cregger)
  • The Legend of Zelda
  • Bloodborne
  • Helldivers
  • Metal Gear Solid

Universal appears to be the outlier in this group. Their current gaming strategy seems focused on family-friendly hits like the Mario movies and an upcoming 2028 Nintendo/Illumination project (potentially Donkey Kong). While they may want a mature IP for counter-programming, they lack the established connection to McQuarrie or Jordan seen in other studios.

As of now, it remains to be seen which studio will win this high-stakes battle. Success with this project could launch an entirely new film franchise. Regardless of the winner, the box office showdown between Call of Duty and Battlefield promises to be legendary.
