Exodus, the sci-fi RPG from former Mass Effect devs, couldn't look more like Mass Effect in the teasers we've been getting this month

In the month since Archetype Entertainment gave us our first look at its sci-fi RPG Exodus, there has been a steady drip-feed of teasers. These clips showcase intense gunfights, the exploration of alien worlds, stealth mechanics, and even a man looking out from a balcony.

The main takeaway from these trailers is undeniable: this sure looks like Mass Effect. This resemblance isn't surprising, given that Archetype describes itself as being "led by industry veterans from BioWare, 343, Electronic Arts, Naughty Dog, and other leading AAA studios."

A Familiar Development Pedigree

The talent behind the project is heavy-hitting, including former BioWare design director James Ohlen. However, it is important to note that Ohlen left his role as the head of Archetype late last year.

Regarding his departure, Hasbro vice president of corporate communications Abby Hodes told Bloomberg: "At this stage, James felt his work on the game was complete and that the polishing and tuning were in great hands with the team."

While Exodus is being published by Wizards of the Coast (a subsidiary of Hasbro), the project's timeline remains a bit mysterious. The game isn't due out until next year, meaning there is clearly significant work left to be done, despite the feeling of "business as usual" at Archetype.

Gameplay Features and What to Expect from Exodus

While we are still waiting for a full reveal, an extended look at the RPG is expected this summer. Aesthetically and mechanically, the game feels less like a "spiritual successor" and more like Mass Effect 5. While it isn't just copying the predecessor, some elements feel strikingly familiar:

  • New Stealth Systems: The stealth showcased last week is a new addition, even if it doesn't look revolutionary compared to other modern action titles.
  • Immersive Codex: Fans of the Mass Effect codex will appreciate that you can now view information via on-screen pop-ups rather than navigating separate menus.
  • Atmospheric Environments: Recent teasers feature generic sci-fi cityscapes accompanied by ambient music that sounds remarkably like the Mass Effect Citadel.

I might sound more cynical than expected for someone who loves big-budget sci-fi RPGs, but nothing we have seen so far has truly set my heart pounding. It looks okay—perhaps a bit stiff or dated—but certainly not dreadful.

I am still waiting for a reveal that actually gets me excited. Fingers crossed for the extended showcase this summer! If Exodus fails to deliver, at least we have The Expanse: Osiris Reborn and the latest official Mass Effect entry to fall back on—though I still think that latter move is a terrible idea.
