Final Fantasy series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi has officially addressed the backlash following his praise of an unofficial, AI-generated video depicting a potential Final Fantasy 6 remake.
The controversy began on May 18, when Sakaguchi retweeted an AI-generated mock trailer on his official X account. Reacting to the footage with "What is this?! It’s amazing!", the legendary developer inadvertently sparked a heated debate regarding generative technology in the gaming industry.
The Controversy Surrounding the Final Fantasy 6 Remake Video
The AI-generated video featured the iconic cast—including the villain Kefka—rendered in modern, current-gen graphics. The "trailer" showcased several high-profile moments from the SNES classic, such as:
- The legendary opera house scene.
- Terra’s Esper transformations.
- Sabin suplexing a train.
- Gameplay-style sequences of Terra traversing various towns and overworlds.
While the video stoked massive nostalgia for fans hoping for a modern 3D reimagining, many commenters were quick to criticize Sakaguchi's enthusiasm. Critics questioned whether it was appropriate to praise content created without explicit permission, with some pointing out potential copyright infringement regarding the use of the game's logo and Terra’s theme.
Even industry veteran Akitoshi Kawazu, a contemporary of Sakaguchi who worked on early titles, weighed in on the discourse. Suggesting a more cautious reaction was necessary, Kawazu noted: “No, Sakaguchi-san, you should have stopped after the first line.” However, he did concede that "I do think that 6 would be suitable for a remake."
Sakaguchi Defends His Reaction to AI Technology
In a follow-up post, Sakaguchi expressed surprise at the sheer scale of the backlash. He clarified that his reaction was driven by instinct rather than an endorsement of current AI methods.
"I just kind of intuitively reacted to the potential," Sakaguchi explained. While he acknowledged that AI content is not yet high enough quality to be used as-is, he believes it holds significant promise for future developments. He noted that his entire 40-year career has been driven by a pursuit of exciting new ideas and technologies.
Interestingly, Sakaguchi ended his response by sharing an animated concept illustration from his studio's 2008 debut, Lost Odyssey, implying he may have used generative tools to animate the image himself.
Will We Ever See a Real Final Fantasy 6 Remake?
The viral nature of the AI video underscores a massive fan desire for a full 3D remake of the SNES masterpiece. However, fans may have to wait a long time if Square Enix follows the timeline suggested by leadership.
In 2024, Final Fantasy 6 director Yoshinori Kitase mentioned that a remake on par with the Final Fantasy 7 Remake project could take roughly 20 years to complete. Due to the game's immense depth and massive cast of characters, Kitase noted it would likely require double the development time of the FF7 trilogy.
