The Bioscanner is a vital late-game upgrade for your standard Scanner. This essential tool allows you to scan marine life to unlock various additional Biomods, making it one of the most important progression items in the game. Because scans are not retroactive, you should aim to acquire the Bioscanner as soon as possible; otherwise, you will have to manually track down and re-scan every creature you have already catalogued.
Finding the Subnautica 2 Bioscanner Location
To begin your search for the upgrade, you must first reach the Alien Ruins area. This requires completing the mission at the Tadpole Pens and navigating across the large, open stretch of ocean. Before diving deep, ensure you have equipped the Depth Module for your Tadpole to prevent being crushed by high-pressure environments.
The Bioscanner is located within the Cicada wreckage. To find it, head 500 meters directly 130 degrees southeast of the Alien Ruins Research Outpost. If you haven't received the objective to find Iso’s blackbox (which requires completing Ruby’s second blackbox first), the path may look like a descent into the abyss. Keep swimming; you will eventually encounter alien structures and the wreckage.
Once you reach the Cicada wreck, follow these steps:
- Enter through the open hatch on the eastern side.
- Use your Repair Tool to fix the damaged door inside.
- Move through the next room and turn left into the chamber containing Iso’s blackbox.
- Pro Tip: Grab the Photovoltaic Charger recipe for your Tadpole and any missing Bio Lab recipes while in this room.
- Swim down the chute located in the corner of the room.
- Navigate through the square hole in the wreckage wall ahead of you.
- Scan the Bioscanner located next to the broken door at the end of the wreck.
While you can repair the door to exit through the bottom, it is generally easier to backtrack the way you came. You may also see a Modification Station up top that is worth scanning for later use.
How to craft the Bioscanner in Subnautica 2
Because the Bioscanner functions as an upgrade rather than a standalone tool, you cannot simply build it from scratch. You must first construct a Modification Station at your base using these materials:
- 2x Titanium
- 2x Celestine
- 2x Copper
Once your station is operational, you can use the following ingredients to craft the actual Bioscanner upgrade:
- 1x Scanner
- 2x Enameled Glass (crafted from glass and Creature Enamel)
- 3x Conduit Crystal
With the Bioscanner in hand, head to a Bio Lab. From there, you can view and unlock active and passive Biomods by scanning diverse creatures, including the formidable Collector Leviathan.
