GTA 6 release timeline

Do you remember where you were just over a year ago, on May 6, 2025? That’s when Rockstar released its second trailer for GTA 6 and also confirmed its updated release date: May 26, 2026. Neither can I, but I do know I was excited as all hell alongside every other gamer, and that makes today so painful.

A few months went by before Rockstar announced that the floodgates to GTA 6 won’t open on May 26, instead delaying it for a second time to November 19, 2026, to “allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve.” (Image credit: Rockstar)

It’s never a bad idea to give developers more time to polish a game, and as Take‑Two CEO Strauss Zelnick previously said, “we’ve never regretted [a delay] in retrospect.” But that doesn’t mean the delay left a mark. Something that plenty of fans have reflected on, especially today.

Fan reaction to the GTA 6 delay

If you dare venture over to r/GTA6 you’ll find a bevy of despairing fans mourning what could have been had Rockstar not delayed GTA 6 for the second time. People are reposting Rockstar’s initial post about the May 26 release date, grasping at a reality that’s no longer there. There’s a mountain of depressing videos: Tobey Maguire’s breakdown in Pawn Sacrifice, Al Pacino screaming his lungs out, and an obligatory James Gandolfini scene from The Sopranos. Today was supposed to be the day for us all to rejoice. 🥺

  • “I’m waiting in front of GameStop until it opens because they said that the game comes out today but I’m the only one here.” – a fan at a local store.
  • “Let’s just pray there’s no more delays.” – another player’s hopeful note.

Well the good news is there won’t be any more delays, if Zelnick is to be believed (I’d say that’s a safe bet). And while I’m not sure I believe all the theorists claiming Rockstar will give fans some more scraps to chew on because today is such a special day, at least we only have to wait 176 days until its release—oh god, that’s a long time.

GTA 6 remains on track for November 19, 2026, and fans will still be queuing for the game they love.
