DC Universe chief James Gunn has confirmed that the highly anticipated movie The Authority has officially fallen by the wayside. While other upcoming projects like Booster Gold and Paradise Lost remain active, Gunn revealed significant hurdles for this specific WildStorm-inspired project.
Why The Authority is on the Back Burner
In a series of posts on Threads, Gunn explained that the script simply wasn't ready. More importantly, he noted that the film struggled to fit within the broader DCU narrative due to both storytelling and practical concerns. He even suggested the project might not return "soon."
Gunn has been transparent about the difficulties of managing such a massive slate. He previously described the production of The Authority as one of the "hardest" projects within the Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters lineup.
The Challenge of Competing with The Boys
One major factor in the delay is the current landscape of superhero media. Gunn pointed to Amazon’s smash hit, The Boys, as a contributing factor to the project's difficulty.
"Honestly, Authority's been the one that's been the hardest, both because of the shifting overall story and because of getting it right in a world with The Boys and a world with all the things that The Authority influenced that came out after it," Gunn admitted.
The director also noted the importance of character continuity. He expressed a desire to continue stories for characters fans have already fallen in love with, rather than rushing into new, disconnected narratives.
The Current Status of the DCU Slate
While The Authority is currently sidelined, other cornerstones of the DC Studios reboot are moving forward. Gunn emphasized that the studio will not greenlight a film until they have a finished script and are satisfied with the quality.
Here is an update on the development of other key projects:
- Booster Gold: Currently in development.
- Paradise Lost: In "extreme development," this series is described as a Game of Thrones-style story set in Themyscira.
- Superman: Man of Tomorrow: Gunn is currently busy with the production of this follow-up.
- Confirmed upcoming titles: Includes the HBO series Lanterns, as well as the films Supergirl and Clayface.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the team, elements of the group have already surfaced in the new continuity. The character The Engineer (Angela Spica) appeared in last year's Superman. As a technopath with genius-level intellect, she remains a powerful link to the WildStorm Universe within the growing franchise.
