Kaspersky Warns of Malware Hidden in Anime Girl Wallpapers on Steam Workshop
If you're a fan of anime girl wallpapers on Steam Workshop, you might want to think twice before downloading them. According to cybersecurity firm Kaspersky, hackers are exploiting the popularity of these visuals to distribute malware through Wallpaper Engine, a popular Steam-based application for dynamic desktop backgrounds.
The issue arises from the way Wallpaper Engine works. It allows users to run executable programs directly on their Windows computers as part of their desktop wallpaper. This feature, while convenient, has become a prime target for attackers looking to sneak malicious software into users’ systems under the guise of legitimate content.
How the Malware Is Being Distributed
Kaspersky researchers discovered that malware is being bundled into Wallpaper Engine packages in two main ways. The first involves malicious executables hidden within the wallpaper package itself, while the second method uses password-protected archives. These passwords are often embedded in archive names or configuration files, making them appear legitimate to unsuspecting users.
Once installed, the malicious wallpaper can automatically trigger the payload, which may include backdoors or information-stealing tools. For example, one of the malicious wallpaper samples discovered in December 2025 seemed to function normally at first, launching an embedded desktop game without any visible signs of compromise. However, in the background, it deployed the DarkKomet backdoor and installed a modified library designed to target Steam users—harvesting account information and hijacking active Steam sessions.
Which Users Are Most at Risk?
The malware distribution campaign primarily targeted users in China and Russia, though Singapore, Hong Kong, Germany, Vietnam, India, and Canada have also been affected. Kaspersky’s security researchers believe the campaign is not a coordinated effort but rather the work of multiple independent threat actors.
If you're a weeb who enjoys anime girl wallpapers, it's important to stay vigilant. Always ensure that the wallpaper packages you download are from trusted creators and check for any unusual behavior after installation. While Wallpaper Engine offers a unique and visually appealing experience, it's crucial to remember that not all desktop wallpapers are created equal—some might come with hidden dangers.
