Stellaris' Nomads Expansion: A Nomadic Journey Through the Stars

Stellaris' Nomads expansion has finally given me the chance to live out my Battlestar Galactica fantasies, offering a unique gameplay experience as a nomadic faction. The expansion allows players to start without claiming territory, instead relying on an Arkship as their mobile base of operations. This approach feels liberating, especially for those who enjoy the early game's exploration and discovery.

The Arkship: A Mobile Powerhouse

The Arkship in the Nomads expansion is essentially a colony, shipyard, and battle fleet all in one. It allows players to ignore closed borders, giving them the freedom to explore the galaxy without the constraints of territorial claims. This flexibility is a major plus, especially for those who enjoy the thrill of the unknown.

However, the Arkship's mobility comes with its own set of challenges. Nomadic factions rely on Waystations to harvest and stockpile resources. Once these stations are full, they need to be picked up by a logistics ship and delivered to the Arkship. This process can become cumbersome as the galaxy becomes more populated, making it increasingly difficult for your ships to ferry resources to you.

An alternative to using Waystations is to harvest resources directly from planets with your Arkship. However, this method reduces planetary mining station output by 75% for a period and may draw the ire of the faction that owns the system. To avoid these issues, it's best to target unclaimed systems without existing Waystations.

Navigating the Galaxy as a Nomad

As the galaxy becomes more developed, the need to befriend a faction and agree to a Wayline treaty becomes apparent. These treaties allow nomadic factions to build outposts within a faction's territory, providing a more stable resource base. Factions offer various contracts to nomadic races, such as remote research, transporting sightseers, or scanning systems. These contracts are an easy way to gain influence, which can be used to construct more Waylines or form treaties.

One of the new features in the Nomads expansion is the Operational Reserves resource, which combines Energy Credits and Minerals. While this resource adds a layer of strategy, it can be confusing due to the lack of clear information on how it functions. The reserve level (low, medium, high) provides various benefits or detriments to your Arkships, and players can choose the speed at which they consume their reserves to add further bonuses. However, without a proper breakdown, maintaining a balanced reserve level can be tricky.

The Nomadic Experience: A Work in Progress

For the most part, piloting an Arkship across the galaxy is an enjoyable experience. Upgrading your Arkship into an unstoppable juggernaut is a rewarding goal, but the phrase "We're running out of sky" often comes to mind as the galaxy becomes more populated. The pressure to befriend and support a faction increases, especially as completing contracts is so lucrative.

Despite these challenges, the Nomads expansion adds a lot of fun elements to the Stellaris galaxy. Running into other nomadic factions and participating in events like the Champion's Forge Live can be incredibly engaging. The expansion also includes new OST tracks, such as "Manduul Haan" by Batzorig Vaanchig, which features a lovely bit of Mongolian throat singing.

While the Nomads expansion isn't perfect, it definitely contributes to the fun of Stellaris. Playing as a nomadic faction isn't 100% what it should be right now, but the addition of the Arkship and the freedom it provides make for an exciting and unique gameplay experience.
