If you missed out on the initial launch of the Steam Controller, you aren't alone. May 4 was much more than just a celebration for Star Wars fans; it was also a frustrating experience for many gamers attempting to secure one of Valve's newest peripherals.

Many prospective buyers were met with error messages during checkout, leaving them empty-handed despite their best efforts. Fortunately, the second chance is officially on the horizon. If you missed the first drop, you can grab your Steam Controller when it becomes available again on May 8.

How to Secure Your Steam Controller Preorder

Valve is clearly aware of the recent technical difficulties and is adjusting the rollout process to make the next launch less painful. To ensure a smoother experience, Valve has implemented specific criteria for who can participate in this upcoming release.

The preorder window opens on May 8 at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET. To successfully complete a purchase, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Account Standing: You must have an existing Steam account in good standing.
  • Purchase History: Your account must have a recorded game purchase prior to April 27, 2026.
  • Purchase Limits: There is a strict limit of one Steam Controller per user.

Preventing Bot Interference

One of the primary goals behind these new restrictions is to curb the impact of automated scripts. By requiring a history of legitimate game purchases, Valve is making it significantly harder for new bot accounts to swoop in and hoard the limited stock during the drop.

Keep in mind that if you were successful during the May 4 launch, you will not be eligible to purchase a second unit. Set your alarms for May 8, and make sure your account meets the requirements so you don't miss out on this hardware wave again.
