If there is one thing you should know about me, it is that I absolutely adore Death of Stalin. While every actor in that film was incredible, it cemented Jason Isaacs as one of my all-time favorite performers. I have always been a massive fan of Gundam, but I never imagined these two worlds would collide. That is why the recent casting news for the upcoming live-action Gundam movie has given me a genuine shred of hope.
A Star-Studded Cast for the Live-Action Gundam Movie
An official post on X recently confirmed that production is officially underway for this massive undertaking. The announcement describes the film as the next chapter for the iconic franchise, focusing on rival mech pilots engaged in war across Earth and its space colonies.
The announced cast includes several recognizable names:
- Jason Isaacs
- Sydney Sweeney
- Noah Centineo
- Nonso Anozie
While I am personally excited to see Nonso Anozie—having thoroughly enjoyed his work in Sweet Tooth—I am not entirely certain if the rest of the cast hits the mark for the franchise.
Concerns Regarding Production and Design
Despite the excitement surrounding Isaacs, I have significant reservations about a Netflix-led adaptation. My primary concern regarding this live-action Gundam movie is the mecha design. In the Gundam universe, the mobile suits are far too integral to the story to get them wrong.
We do not yet know who is responsible for the visual effects or the mechanical designs, so it is not a complete lost cause just yet. The quality of these machines will likely be the deciding factor in whether I actually watch the film.
Looking Toward the Future
If the adaptation fails to meet expectations, fans can always retreat to established classics like War in the Pocket or Mobile Suit Gundam 00. There are so many incredible series available that fans are already spoilt for choice.
Currently, no release date has been announced since production has only just begun. We may have a significant wait before we get our first glimpse of what this live-action Gundam movie will actually look like on screen.
