Overwatch's new season kicked off last week, bringing a new battle pass, hero, and various skins. Alongside these additions, the patch notes featured some significant adjustments, including Sierra's incredibly strong kit and the much-anticipated Roadhog Chain Hook nerf. As a support main who frequently ends up on the wrong end of a hook, I was actually quite happy to see that cooldown increase—at least for a moment.
That happiness was short-lived. Only one week later, Team 4 has effectively put everything back to normal, leaving many players scratching their heads.
The Sudden Reversal of Overwatch Balance Changes
The latest update, dated April 23, 2026, reveals that the Roadhog Chain Hook nerf is being rolled back. The cooldown for his signature ability has been brought back down, providing much-needed relief to his players. However, other heroes were not left untouched by these changes:
- Roadhog: Chain Hook cooldown reduced from 8 to 7 seconds.
- Sombra: Stealth movement speed bonus reduction while revealed by damage decreased from 50% to 33%.
- Vendetta: Total health increased from 175 to 200.
The Difficulty of Balancing Hook Heroes
The rapid swing in balance has left the community divided. This sudden shift in power is particularly jarring given how quickly the change occurred. Overwatch streamer Frogger highlighted the absurdity of the situation on social media, noting the extreme difference in how various heroes are treated.
"The generation of Lucio players I ruined can't even lower his winrate to get a buff," Frogger shared. "But Roadhog did it in a week. A WEEK!!!"
Roadhog presents a unique challenge for developers because he is notoriously difficult to balance. When he is strong, he can feel suffocating and oppressive to play against. On the other hand, when the Roadhog Chain Hook nerf is too effective, he becomes a "paper" pick that lacks any presence on the battlefield.
This cycle of sporadic patches means players are often caught in a loop of extreme viability. While it may seem like small adjustments, even a single second of cooldown or a minor change to damage can completely shift the meta. For now, Hog players should make the most of the current buffs and enjoy the lack of that extra second of downtime.
