Fans of 90s nostalgia are reeling following news that Peacock has canceled the Clueless sequel series. While the project was originally announced in April 2025 with Alicia Silverstone set to return as Cher, a new report from Variety indicates that development has officially stalled.
Peacock Has Canceled the Clueless Sequel Series: What’s Next?
Despite the setback, the door may not be closed forever. Because interest in this specific Clueless sequel series remains incredibly high, industry insiders suggest that another network could potentially snap up the project once it returns to the market.
During an interview with Entertainment Tonight last year, Silverstone shared her enthusiasm for the role and her commitment to the legacy of the franchise. She noted that the team's primary goal was to honor the original film while introducing modern elements. "We will do our very best to honor the original movie that we love and also bring something new to it," she stated.
Silverstone’s Vision for a Modern Cher
The actress also hinted at a more mature, socially conscious version of her iconic character. She suggested that fans would see a more thoughtful Cher, reflecting the changes in the world by 2025.
"I can't wait to step back into Cher's skin and her fancy designer shoes that will be gently used. Of course, duh," Silverstone remarked. "Because she's evolved; this is 2025. She's not wearing the new stuff. Unless it's, you know, sustainable or vegan."
The Creative Team Behind the Project
The production boasted an impressive lineup of talent experienced in iconic teen dramas. The creative roster included:
- Writers: Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz (known for Gossip Girl and The OC), along with Jordan Weiss (Dollface, Freakier Friday, and the upcoming Polly Pocket Movie)
- Producers: Alicia Silverstone and Amy Heckerling (the writer and director of the original 1995 classic)
A Bumpy Road for Clueless TV Projects
This latest development follows a pattern of difficulty for potential Clueless sequel series. Back in 2020, CBS TV Studios was working on a different concept focused on Dionne Davenport, played by Stacey Dash. However, that specific idea was abandoned after the focus shifted toward the Peacock development.
