After nearly 30 years of fan speculation, it is finally official: Leon S. Kennedy is named after the 1994 movie Léon: The Professional. Resident Evil 2 director Hideki Kamiya confirmed the connection via a post on X/Twitter today, putting an end to decades of theories regarding one of gaming's most iconic protagonists.
How the Name Was Created
The revelation comes after years of fans connecting the dots between the survival horror hero and the character played by Jean Reno in the 1994 classic. Kamiya shared that the idea surfaced while he was consulting with Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami.
After several initial ideas were rejected, the director suggested a simple solution. "Well, why don't we just take it from that movie I watched the other day?" Kamiya recalled (via Google Translate). When presented with the suggestion, Mikami’s response was famously brief: "Yeah, that works."
Kamiya noted that the reaction to this news has been unexpected. He even joked that he was surprised he hadn't mentioned the connection sooner, as he wasn't intentionally trying to keep it a secret.
Cinematic Connections in Resident Evil
Beyond the obvious name similarity, fans have long pointed to other elements within the series that seem to reference Léon: The Professional. These connections include:
-
The legendary "Professional" difficulty setting used throughout the franchise.
-
The Matilda handgun, which many assumed was a nod to the character Mathilda (played by Natalie Portman).
However, Kamiya clarified that the Matilda reference was not his creation. He noted that someone else at Capcom added that specific detail after he had already left the company.
The Legacy of Hideki Kamiya
The impact of Kamiya’s work on Resident Evil remains massive, from the 2019 Resident Evil 2 remake to the 2023 Resident Evil 4 remake and the recent launch of Resident Evil Requiem this past February.
Beyond his time at Capcom, Kamiya has carved out a legendary career in action gaming. His notable achievements include:
- Directing the stylish Devil May Cry series.
- Leading celebrated titles like Okami and Viewtiful Joe.
- Co-founding PlatinumGames, the studio behind hits like Bayonetta and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.
After departing PlatinumGames in 2023, Kamiya launched his new studio, Clovers. His current project involves assisting Capcom with the development of Okami 2.
