Snap's AR Glasses: A Bold Design with a Price Tag
Snap, the company behind the popular instant messaging app Snapchat, has recently unveiled its latest innovation in the world of augmented reality (AR) — a pair of glasses called Specs. These glasses are marketed as a potential alternative to constantly looking down at a smartphone screen, but their $2,195 price tag and chunky design have raised more than a few eyebrows. In a recent CNBC clip, Snap's CEO, Evan Spiegel, described the Specs as "highly wearable," even as the glasses are clearly visible crushing his earlobes in the video.
While the design may not be everyone's cup of tea, the Specs are clearly packed with advanced hardware. The glasses are equipped with two Snapdragon processors — one dedicated to computer vision and the other for running Lenses — which together enable fast hand tracking, low latency, and responsive interactions. According to Snap, the Specs deliver a motion-to-photon latency of just 7 milliseconds, verified through advanced robotic measurement systems.
A Glimpse into the Experience
Snap claims that the lenses are designed to provide an immersive experience, comparable to "a 24-inch desktop monitor when you're working, or a 115-inch home cinema screen placed about 10 feet away when you're watching a movie." This suggests that the Specs are not just a novelty but an attempt to bring AR into the mainstream, offering users a more engaging and realistic experience than traditional smartphone-based AR.
However, the device’s battery life remains a concern. With only four hours of mixed use — including audio and video playback, Lenses, AI assistance, and Bluetooth notifications — the Specs may require frequent recharging. Fortunately, the included charging case can provide four additional charges, offering a total of 20 hours of battery life. While this may not be ideal, it at least gives users some flexibility when using the device on the go.
The unveiling of Specs has had a noticeable impact on Snap's stock performance. Since the initial announcement on June 16, the company's share price has experienced a decline, with six consecutive days of losses reported by Seeking Alpha. This drop in value may be a reflection of investor skepticism regarding the practicality and marketability of the Specs, despite their impressive technical specifications.
Ultimately, the Specs represent a bold step for Snap into the AR space. While the design may not be to everyone's taste and the price is steep, the company is clearly aiming to push the boundaries of what AR glasses can do.
