Valve Recognizes AMD's 9070 XT in Steam Hardware Survey
Valve’s Steam Hardware Survey has long been a go-to resource for PC hardware trends, despite its occasional data quirks. The latest update, however, has brought a significant change: AMD's Radeon 9070 XT is now showing up in the survey with a notable presence. Previously, the 9070 XT had been nearly invisible, with no recorded data. Now, it holds a 1.33% share of Steam users, placing it 23rd in the rankings for discrete GPUs. This jump is substantial and raises questions about what has changed to make this happen.
Data Shifts and Possible Explanations
In the latest survey, the share of the generic "AMD Radeon(TM) Graphics" category has dropped significantly—from 2.37% in April to 0.90% in May. This decrease is suspiciously close to the 1.33% increase in the 9070 XT’s visibility, suggesting a possible shift in how data is being collected or categorized.
There are a few plausible explanations for this change. One possibility is that Valve has updated its data collection methods to better identify specific AMD GPUs. Another is that AMD has made adjustments in its driver software to help distinguish between different models more clearly. This would explain why previously uncounted 9070 XT cards are now being recognized individually.
The small gap between the decline of the generic Radeon category and the rise of the 9070 XT could be due to a few factors. It’s possible that other AMD GPUs have also benefited from the improved data collection, although the vanilla RX 9070, which was already in previous surveys, hasn’t seen a similar boost. Additionally, not all AMD GPU users may have updated their drivers, which could account for some of the discrepancy.
A More Accurate Picture of GPU Usage
Despite these anomalies, the new data seems more accurate than previous instances where survey numbers fluctuated wildly. For example, the Chinese Lunar New Year often causes spikes or drops in user data, but this change feels more permanent.
AMD’s RDNA 4 GPUs, particularly the 9070 XT, have been performing well in sales charts, with models like the Gigabyte 9070 XT topping Amazon’s rankings. This suggests that the card has a decent level of adoption, even if it wasn’t reflected in the Steam Hardware Survey before. The survey’s update now aligns more closely with real-world sales data, offering a better representation of the GPU’s market presence.
With the 9070 XT finally getting the recognition it deserves in the Steam Hardware Survey, it's a step in the right direction. However, the world of PC hardware data is ever-changing, and it's only a matter of time before another anomaly catches our attention.
