Nicolas Cage is attempting to bridge the gap between modern superhero spectacle and cinematic history through his role in the upcoming Prime Video series, Spider-Noir. The Hollywood veteran revealed that he actively pushed for the production to offer a color option alongside its traditional monochromatic look, specifically targeting a younger demographic.

Cage hopes that by providing a "true hue" color mode, teenage viewers will be more engaged, eventually leading them back to the roots of film history and the aesthetic origins of the genre.

Inspiring Teens via Spider-Noir

The actor’s goal is for the series to act as a gateway to classic filmmaking. By allowing modern audiences to experience the story in color first, Cage believes they may become curious enough to explore the historical foundations of cinema.

"I am aware of teenagers, and I’m aware they don’t have that much experience with black and white," Cage explained in a recent interview. "So the dream is they watch it in color and then they check it out in black and white and learn something... Then they open a treasure trove of wealth, of the great American cinema."

Cage noted that he specifically designed his performance for the black and white medium, embracing the noir aesthetic while ensuring the show remains accessible to those unfamiliar with the style.

Spider-Noir Plot and Viewing Options

Set in 1930s New York City, the series follows Ben Reilly, a retired gumshoe who is forced out of retirement to take down various villains. To accommodate different tastes, the production leans heavily into its namesake genre by offering two distinct ways to watch:

  • Subgenre-accurate black and white for the purists.
  • "True hue" color for a modern perspective.
