The sandbox legend Garry's Mod is expanding its toybox once again. Facepunch announced this week that the game's next major patch, arriving April 29, will finally integrate the Valve-approved Half-Life remake into the community ecosystem.

Bringing Black Mesa to Garry's Mod

This update is a direct response to player requests. "By popular demand and with approval from its developers, this update will be adding mounting support for Black Mesa in Garry's Mod," the official blog post reads.

For the tens of thousands of players who still frequent Garry's Mod daily, this is massive news. Black Mesa, developed by Crowbar Collective, serves as a high-fidelity reimagining of the original Half-Life 1. The Valve-approved Half-Life remake offers significant upgrades that creators can now leverage, including:

  • Enhanced animations
  • Improved sound design
  • Superior weapon feedback

While Garry's Mod already features various add-ons designed to modernize Valve's base Source assets, the arrival of the Valve-approved Half-Life remake provides a new layer of depth for custom modes.

New Assets and a Special Bundle

To make use of these new textures and models, players must already own Black Mesa. To celebrate the integration, Facepunch is offering both titles as a bundle for just $13.

The April 20 patch also contains much more than just new assets. The full patch notes reveal over a hundred minor bug fixes and asset changes. Some of these updates involve deleting functions that served no purpose in Garry's Mod, which developers described as a "waste of resources" during the game's 20-year history of sporadic patching.

Looking Ahead to S&box

The timing of this update is particularly exciting as we approach the launch of S&box. Scheduled for release on April 28—just one day before the Garry's Mod patch—S&box serves as the spiritual successor to the classic sandbox.

Much like its predecessor, S&box utilizes a custom version of Valve's Source 2 engine to allow for infinite creativity. However, Facepunch is taking things much further with this release. They have stated that S&box functions more like a complete game engine, capable of powering entire games that can be published as standalone releases on Steam.
