The Asus ROG Ally X20 Finally Gets The Upgrade Fans Have Been Asking For
Computex week has officially kicked off, and Asus has unveiled the ROG Ally X20 at the annual expo. This new iteration brings a host of improvements to the table, even though the internal hardware remains largely unchanged from last year's ROG Ally. The major changes include a new OLED screen, a translucent plastic shell, GuliKit TMR joysticks with drift resistance, an eight-direction D-pad, and other under-the-hood enhancements.
For the display, Asus has opted for a 7.4-inch 120Hz OLED 1080p screen. It can reach up to 1,400 nits of brightness in HDR mode and supports Dolby Vision. This screen has been certified with VESA DisplayHDR TrueBlack 1000, which marks a significant upgrade over the LCD screen used in the 2025 ROG Ally X. For context, the previous model featured a 7-inch 1080p 120Hz IPS display that could reach 500 nits of brightness, which is still impressive. However, the new OLED screen clearly outperforms it in key areas, especially when compared to the Steam Deck (1,280 x 800, 90Hz) and Switch OLED (1,280 x 720) displays.
OLED screens are known for their vibrant colors and deep black levels, and with Dolby Vision support, games should look truly stunning if everything is optimized. Another notable change is the removal of the "Library" button in favor of an "Action" button that can be used for capturing screenshots and gameplay footage. Similar to modern Xbox and PlayStation controllers, this button takes a screenshot when tapped and starts recording gameplay when held down.
In terms of physical design, the X20 is slightly larger than the previous model and is 41 grams heavier. The ABXY face buttons now sit more flush with the shell, and the body has been modified to allow better airflow for improved cooling.
One detail Asus hasn't revealed yet is the price, but according to The Verge, the ROG Ally X20 will be sold exclusively as part of a bundle with a pair of Asus and Xreal's R1 glasses. The AR glasses alone cost $849, and given the rising prices of PC gaming handhelds, it's unclear how much the upgraded X20 will set you back. So far, Microsoft and Asus have kept the prices of the ROG Ally X and the lower-specced ROG Ally unchanged, but with AI-fueled demand for chips and other global factors, a price increase might be on the horizon.
The ROG Ally X currently starts at $600 for the entry-level model, while the higher-end ROG Ally X begins at $1,000. If you haven't explored it yet, the Asus ROG Ally X is one of the best PC gaming handhelds on the market. Its combination of powerful hardware, clever design revisions, and convenient Xbox mode makes it a highly versatile device that's perfect for gaming on the go.
