How to Complete The Price of Magic in Gothic Remake
Magic is a powerful tool in Gothic Remake, especially in the early stages of the game, where it can significantly enhance your combat capabilities. One of the most beneficial quests to complete is The Price of Magic, which takes place in the Old Camp. This quest involves helping the mage Torrez by gathering a few specific items in exchange for a valuable spell rune. This rune allows you to cast spells permanently as long as you have mana in your tank, giving you a significant edge in battles. Additionally, completing this quest unlocks Torrez's magical inventory, where you can purchase more spells, including one-time consumable scrolls. While these scrolls may be too expensive early on, the offensive magic you gain will help you fight more effectively than your current gear might suggest.
Finding the Necessary Items for Torrez
To begin The Price of Magic quest, you need to acquire two key items: one parchment and two wolf’s claws. The parchment can be purchased from Graham, the map maker, who resides near the north gate of the Old Camp. His shack is just to the left of the north gate, and he’s often found wandering around or near the cooking cauldron. The parchment will cost you 13 ore nuggets.
For the wolf’s claws, you have two options. You can buy them from Mordrag, who is located near the market area in the Old Camp. From Torrez’s location, head through the market area and look for Mordrag sitting on a bench outside a shack on your left. Each wolf’s claw costs seven ore nuggets, totaling 14 for both. Alternatively, you can obtain them for free by following this method: go through the north gate, cross the bridge with the guards, and head north into the woods until you find a wolf den. Once you get a wolf’s attention, lead it back to the bridge where the guards will kill it, allowing you to loot the body. This is a more efficient method, especially if you're looking to conserve resources early in the game.
Completing the Quest and Unlocking Magic
Once you have the parchment and wolf’s claws, return to Torrez and deliver the items. Afterward, you’ll have the option to learn Rune Magic by spending five learning points. Torrez will craft a rune for you, which can be either a fire bolt or a healing spell. If you're looking to maximize your damage output early on, fire bolt is the recommended choice. Healing can be achieved by eating food, which is a more sustainable option in the long run.
Completing the quest also unlocks Torrez’s store, where you can purchase various magical items such as scrolls, runes, and mana potions. While resting and passing time will regenerate your mana, a quicker and cheaper method is to smoke swamp weed, which temporarily reduces your dexterity. You can purchase this from vendors like Dexter in the market area, and he may even offer you some for free. Additionally, the Swamp Camp provides a daily ration of swamp weed, making it a good place to visit for resource gathering.
Additional Tips for Magic Development
If you're looking to further enhance your magical abilities, consider visiting the New Camp in the west of The Colony. There, you can interact with Cronos, the Water Mage, who is located in the headquarters of the New Camp, which is at the back of the big settlement cave. Cronos can help you increase your overall mana capacity by spending more learning points. This is a great way to prepare for more advanced magical combat later in the game.
