Locating Your First Sulfur Deposit in Subnautica 2
Despite how easy it actually is to get sulfur in Subnautica 2, I was completely stumped when I suddenly needed just one piece to craft the Repair Tool. It is a critical early-game item because it allows you to break open a nearby wreck, unlocking the Rebreather equipment essential for deep diving.
Below, I’ll explain where you can quickly find your first sulfur and how to secure enough for the immediate future. While you will eventually need the Sonic Resonator to collect it in bulk, your initial discovery is straightforward if you know where to look.
Best Early-Game Sulfur Location
Sulfur appears as a yellowish rock (technically a crystal) that can be easily mistaken for gold. The most efficient place to find sulfur early on is on a specific rock pillar located in the open seabed.
To reach this deposit, head approximately 120° southeast of the Lifepod. The pillar is situated about 25 meters deep and 200 meters away, just past the Welcome Centre. You might have already noticed a Wakemaker fragment on the science platform at the base of this pillar.
In this immediate area, you will find:
- Four large sulfur deposits that require the Sonic Resonator to mine.
- Several small deposits that can be grabbed by hand, providing a good initial basketful.
- Scattered sulfur nodes dotted across the sand.
- A nearby source of salt for crafting needs.
Warning: This area is close to the volcanic vents. Do not swim any further northeast until you have acquired the Heat Tolerance Adaptation, or you risk burning to a crisp.
Crafting the Repair Tool
Your first major use for sulfur is in crafting the Repair Tool. Once you have gathered your resources, you can assemble this handy gadget using the following materials:
- 1x Sulfur
- 2x Titanium Ingots
- 1x Wiring Kit
- 1x Basic Battery
With the Repair Tool in hand, I recommend heading to the large shipwreck located roughly 360 meters northeast of the Lifepod. Here, you can use the tool to cut open the doors leading to the Rebreather equipment.
Future Sulfur Requirements
As you progress, sulfur remains a vital resource for advanced crafting. You will need it, along with gold, to craft Strong Acid. Additionally, advanced wiring kits are required for later-stage tools and base facilities, all of which often rely on sulfur-based components. Keep an eye on your inventory as you explore deeper biomes.
