How to Get Gold in Subnautica 2

Finding gold in Subnautica 2 is a critical step for mid-to-late game progression, as it is a mandatory component for crafting the Advanced Wiring Kit and the System Chip. These components are essential for unlocking higher-tier technology, while gold itself is also required to construct a Thermal Plant.

Thermal Plants provide one of the most reliable methods of power production for your base, significantly outperforming standard Solar Panels and rivaling the Hydroelectric Turbine in consistency. While gathering gold requires a degree of progression, it is not a resource you will need immediately upon starting your journey.

Locating the Volcanic Vent Region

Gold deposits are exclusively found in the volcanic vent region located to the east of your starting Lifepod. The primary concentration of resources lies on the rocks surrounding the crashed colony ship, situated exactly 450 meters to the east.

Navigating this area requires caution due to the presence of large predatory fish that patrol the wreck. You can easily identify when you have entered this high-temperature zone by two distinct visual cues:

  • The water takes on a distinct orange hue.
  • Sparks float visibly in the water.
  • A temperature gauge appears in the center of your screen.

Acquiring Heat Tolerance

Before you can safely enter the volcanic region to mine gold, you must acquire the Heat Tolerance adaptation. Without this upgrade, entering the zone will cause your character to burn rapidly.

To obtain Heat Tolerance, you need to destroy an Angel Comb located approximately 200 meters to the northwest of the Lifepod. This process involves two specific steps:

  1. You must first acquire the Sonic Resonator tool.
  2. Use the Sonic Resonator to destroy the viral growths surrounding the Angel Comb bloom.

Mining Gold Resources

Once you have the necessary heat protection, you can begin harvesting gold from three different sources within the volcanic vents:

  • Tiny Fragments: Small pieces that can be collected directly by hand.
  • Smashable Blocks: Small clusters that require a tool to break.
  • Large Nodes: Significant deposits that must be shattered using the Sonic Resonator.

Because the volcanic region is dangerous and requires significant preparation, it is highly recommended to gather as much gold as possible while in the area before returning to the safety of your base.
