Getting started in Subnautica 2 can be an overwhelming experience. Whether you are struggling with limited lung capacity that forces frequent surfacing, or you simply cannot digest the colorful alien fish you catch, there is a mountain of information to process. It is rarely clear what should be prioritized in those critical early hours.
After spending over 30 hours navigating this underwater world, I have compiled a definitive list of recommendations to help you establish a foothold. These tips focus on immediate survival, resource acquisition, and long-term expansion, ensuring you can flourish rather than just survive.
Early Survival and Resource Management
Your initial priority is securing basic needs and establishing a safe zone. The following steps will keep you alive and breathing while you explore.
1. Secure Food and Water Immediately
Check your Lifepod storage for starter supplies. Water is fabricated using Water Slugs, which you can find nearby. To digest raw fish, you need a specific adaptation available at the underwater tree located north-north-west of the Lifepod.
2. Prioritize the Standard Air Tank
Constantly surfacing to breathe is tedious and dangerous. Fabricate the Standard Air Tank as soon as possible. While gathering silver is challenging, a small amount can be found in a cave north of the Lifepod.
3. Carry Air Bladders
Even after crafting O2 upgrades, Air Bladders remain essential. They provide a crucial buffer for quick surfacing, escaping predators, or buying extra time to chug oxygen when caught in a tight spot. Carry at least two at all times.
4. Use Portable Lockers for Farming
When venturing out to gather materials, bring a Portable Locker. You can find one in the cave directly under the Lifepod. These movable storage devices are vital for stowing extra resources without cluttering your main inventory.
5. Keep Spare Batteries Charged
Tools display their remaining power in a small bar above the item. You can swap batteries by pressing 'R' and using the left or right mouse button to reload. Once unlocked, build a Battery Terminal in your base to recharge spares efficiently.
Exploration, Scanning, and Progression
Subnautica 2 relies heavily on discovery. Your scanner is not just a tool; it is the key to unlocking new technologies and understanding the ecosystem.
6. Scan Everything You See
Your scanner unlocks new tools, base facilities (including rooms and posters), and provides biological data on creatures. Scan every item and creature you encounter to expand your database and craftability options.
7. Unlock Biomods for Utility
Once you can craft a basic battery using an Acidic Raion Pouch, head to the Welcome Center southeast of the Lifepod. Plug the battery into the wall and use the Biolab to acquire skills. I strongly recommend prioritizing Dash and Oxygen Control for early mobility and survival.
8. Unlock Base Building Tools
While at the Welcome Center, ensure you scan both Habitat Builder tools. This action unlocks base-building capabilities, though you will need to explore further to unlock specific room blueprints.
9. Follow the Blue Lights
Blue standing lights typically indicate a trail leading to a Colony Habitat. These are small underwater structures containing tools you can scan and audio logs that provide essential lore. Following these trails is often the fastest way to find advanced resources.
10. Expand Inventory and Hotbar
Colony Habitats contain Biobeds. Interact with the screen next to them to unlock endurance (increasing inventory space) and dexterity (expanding hotbar slots). This is crucial for managing the growing number of items you will collect.
11. Craft the Sonic Resonator Early
The Sonic Resonator is a multi-purpose tool. It allows you to mine resources, blast away Bloom Biofilm, discourage predators, and destroy viral blooms. Lead is the trickiest material to find for crafting one, so start searching early.
12. Unlock Heat Tolerance
To enter the dangerous lava vents area, you must visit the Angel Comb northwest of the Lifepod. Destroy the viral growths there with your Sonic Resonator to unlock the Heat Tolerance Adaptation. This is a prerequisite for accessing high-tier resources.
Base Building and Navigation
Establishing a stable base and navigating the vast ocean are key to long-term success in Subnautica 2.
13. Choose a Strategic Base Location
Set up your base near a natural current (visible as blue wind tunnels). This allows you to place a Hydroelectric Turbine for power generation once unlocked. Ensure you have ample space for future expansion.
14. Build a Scanner Station
If you are unsure where to find a specific material, build a Scanner Station in your base. It will highlight all locations of that resource within 300 meters. You can scan one in Old Habitat 350 meters north of the Lifepod.
15. Place Beacons for Navigation
There is no traditional map in Subnautica 2. Once you scan and unlock the Beacon, you can craft these anywhere using the Habitat Builder. Beacons act as toggleable nav markers, helping you track important locations without cluttering your signal list.
16. Customize Your Signals
Each Black Box provides a signal, but you can manage these markers. Press 'Tab' to open the menu, select Signals, and toggle specific ones on or off. This keeps your HUD clean and focused on your current objectives.
17. Follow the Black Boxes
The NOA (Night Owl Alliance) will often ask you to return to its location for hints on Black Box locations. These mark the main story progression, but each site also contains vital tools to scan or recipes to collect. Do not ignore them.
Combat and Mobility
Surviving the deep requires more than just staying alive; it requires moving efficiently and defending yourself.
18. Swim Faster to Evade Predators
While the Dash Biomod helps, crafting Basic Flippers and the Wakemaker mobility device will massively speed up travel. Speed is your best defense against larger predators in open water.
19. Use Tools to Deter Predators
You can discourage predators by whacking them with your Survival Multitool, blasting them with the Sonic Resonator, or tossing a Distraction Flare. Knowing when to fight and when to flee is a critical skill.
20. Build the Tadpole
Your final goal before venturing into deeper waters is building the Tadpole mini-sub. This vessel is essential for exploration. I also recommend crafting a Repair Tool early to keep the Tadpole running after collisions with large predators.
