Where to Find Lead in Subnautica 2
While Subnautica 2 makes titanium relatively easy to gather, locating lead requires a bit more exploration and determination. This metal is not as abundant as other resources, but securing it is crucial because it is the primary material needed to craft the Sonic Resonator.
This tool is far more than a simple pickaxe; it is vital for mining large metal and mineral blocks and for clearing Angel Combs to unlock new biological adaptations. Without the Sonic Resonator, your ability to progress and survive in the alien depths is significantly limited. Here is the most efficient way to find lead early in your journey.
The Lead Location in the Starting Region
The most accessible source of lead is located in a ravine just northeast of your starting point. You do not need to dive deep or explore distant biomes to find this resource.
How to get there:
- Head Northeast: Swim in a bearing of approximately 75° from the Lifepod.
- Follow the Current: Look for a blue natural current visible below the surface. Swim directly into it.
- Descend into the Ravine: The current will propel you downward into a deep ravine.
- Identify Landmarks: Stop when you see a colony platform construction on your left, with a Tadpole fragment nearby.
Once you reach this area, you will spot big block lead deposits embedded in the walls. If you swim further north or east along the sides of the ravine, you can also find smaller bits of lead scattered in the sand or smaller blocks that can be broken down for resources.
Why Lead Matters Early Game
Although lead might seem scarce at first, it serves a critical function in your early progression. Its primary use is crafting the Sonic Resonator, which allows you to interact with larger environmental obstacles. Additionally, lead can be processed into germanium ingots in the Fabricator, although silver can serve as a temporary substitute if needed.
Because lead deposits are sparse in the starting region, I recommend filling your oxygen supply and storing any extra lead in your base immediately. This prevents the need to make a quick, potentially dangerous return trip to the ravine.
Lead Abundance in Later Areas
While the starting region requires careful resource management, lead becomes significantly easier to acquire as you advance. Once you move toward the Alien Ruins area, lead deposits are plentiful and widespread. By the time you reach these deeper biomes, gathering this resource becomes a routine part of your exploration rather than a hunt.

Mastering the Wakemaker and understanding the Tadpole mechanics will also help you navigate the complex ecosystems you will encounter.
