The Boys creator and showrunner Eric Kripke has finally revealed the real-world inspiration behind Firecracker's fate in Season 5, Episode 5. The episode features a brutal conclusion for the character, played by Valorie Curry, as she falls victim to her own leader's whims.
In the latest installment, Firecracker had fully committed herself to Homelander, despite his terrifying ambitions to "ascend" to godhood. As a key member of The Seven, she acted as a loyal enforcer for his most demented requests. However, Homelander’s growing instability led him to distrust even his closest allies.
The end of Episode 5 sees Homelander killing Firecracker by impaling her head on the sharp wing of an eagle statue. It was a shocking moment that effectively ended her arc at the hands of her "Lord."
The Political Connection to Firecracker's Fate
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Kripke admitted that the inspiration for this death came directly from American politics, specifically Marjorie Taylor Greene. He drew parallels between the character's demise and the political fallout involving Donald Trump.
In November of last and recent years, President Donald Trump officially rescinded his endorsement of Representative Greene, marking a significant break between the two former allies. Kripke noted that the show had always planned for an episode where a loyalist would be destroyed by the very person they worship.
“Because for us, it’s like, everyone who’s in his orbit — or everybody who is in a certain public figure’s orbit — they give up every single conviction they’ve ever had, and then he destroys their careers,” Kripke revealed. He added that the writers saw her eventual "banishment" as inevitable.
From Celebrity Satire to Authoritarianism
Kripke also discussed how the show's core mission shifted during production. Originally pitched in 2016 by Kripke, Seth Rogen, and Evan Goldberg, the series was intended to be a realistic look at superheroes behaving badly as celebrities.
However, once Trump’s election changed the political landscape, the show became a metaphor for something much darker:
- The intersection of celebrity and authoritarianism.
- How social media is used to sell fascism.
- The terrifying reality of "creeping authoritarianism" in America.
Kripke expressed regret that Season 5 was written before the November 2024 election, admitting he felt "bummed out" that they couldn't capture the immediate post-election reality. He noted that many far-fetched ideas written by the team have unfortunately become a reality.
Who Is Next for Homelander?
With Firecracker dead, the focus shifts to the remaining members of The Seven and Homelander’s inner circle. Fans are left questioning if others are marked for death:
- Soldier Boy
- The Deep
- Black Noir
- Sister Sage
- Ashley Barrett
Kripke teased that even more shocking moments are coming, mentioning a line in Episode 7 that is already reflecting real-world events. Meanwhile, actor Antony Starr has expressed shock at the "surreal" way some fans have begun to glorify Homelander on social media.
"We had a bunch of guys that we all kind of knocked them down a little but on social media to say, 'This guy is not the hero of any story,'" Starr said in May 2025. He noted how unsettling it was to see people finding empathy for such a "monster."
