Ubisoft Really Wants You to Know That Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced is Not an RPG, as It Details Combat and HUD Changes

Ubisoft is making one thing very clear regarding Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced: this isn't an RPG. In a lengthy post detailing new combat changes and customizable HUD options for the upcoming remake, the publisher went to great lengths to ensure players that the game's genre has not been radically altered to mimic more recent entries.

Avoiding the RPG Label

Ubisoft is actively seeking to distance Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced from recent titles that have leaned heavily into RPG mechanics. By doing so, they aim to appeal to the widest possible audience and avoid the suggestion that the game has been changed beyond recognition.

"Although health and defense bars are present in default settings, this does not change the fact that Black Flag Resynced remains an action-adventure game," Ubisoft wrote. The developer further clarified: "The combat works similarly to the original game, with health and defense bars being optional. There are no levels, no gear scores and no progression gates."

Game director Richard Knight echoed this sentiment during the game's recent unveiling, emphasizing the preservation of the core experience.

"Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced matters deeply to us, and to you," Knight said. "That's why we took the time to rebuild it with the care it deserves. This remains a solo adventure and character-driven experience. It is not an RPG. The focus stays on how you play, and how you explore the world."

New Combat and HUD Changes for Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced

Much like Assassin's Creed Shadows, the upcoming remake features a fully customizable HUD. Players can enable or disable most on-screen elements or choose from several preset defaults to suit their playstyle:

  • Simple HUD: Removes several elements while retaining essential tools for combat and navigation.
  • Minimal HUD: Reduces the interface to only the most vital information, such as health and interaction prompts.

By default, players will see enemy health and defense bars. Ubisoft implemented this choice to help players master a new enemy defense mechanic, where timed parries or sustained/strong attacks can break an enemy's guard to open them up for a takedown. However, even these specific elements can be turned off entirely if desired.

Release Date and Collector's Edition Details

After years of circulating leaks, the wait for Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced is almost over. The long-awaited remake is currently set to launch on July 9 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.

For those looking to go all out, a $200 Collector's Edition will also be available. This edition includes the same Edward Kenway statue that was spotted appearing on Vinted earlier this year.
