Vinit Agarwal, the former director of The Last of Us Online, recently shared that his former colleagues are still reaching out to him. Many continue to message him to express how incredible the multiplayer experience was going to be, even after its cancellation.

Why Naughty Dog Canceled The Last of Us Online

Naughty Dog officially halted development on The Last of Us Online in December 2023. The studio determined that maintaining the necessary post-launch content would require a massive commitment of resources, which would have severely impacted their ability to develop future single-player titles, such as the upcoming Intergalactic: The Heragonist Prophet.

During an interview on the Lance E. Lee Podcast from Tokyo, Agarwal spoke about the "devastating" impact of this decision. He revealed that he only learned about the cancellation 24 hours before Sony made the news public. After working at Naughty Dog from 2014 to 2023, Agarwal has since left to launch his own game development studio in Japan.

Several factors contributed to the project's end:

  • Industry Shifts: A widespread industry pullback following the COVID-19 lockdowns.
  • Sony Strategy: A subsequent reassessment of live service initiatives by Sony.
  • Development Focus: The need to protect the studio's ability to create single-player experiences.

Recreating Survival Desperation in The Last of Us Online

The gameplay for The Last of Us Online was designed to evoke visceral, high-stakes emotions. Agarwal wanted players to feel a sense of true desperation, drawing inspiration from a personal experience of being mugged.

Set in the established TLOU universe 25 years in the future, the game focused on scavenging supplies in a post-apocalyptic world. The primary goal was to find loot, often through the most brutal means possible.

"The goal of the game was to scavenge supplies, and one of the best sources of supplies is to kill the other player, right?" Agarwal explained. He described the "dehumanizing element" where players might hunt others like animals for mere scraps.

He recounted a memorable moment from an early playtest that highlighted this tension: "I was playing a really early version of the game, and someone was shooting at me and I hid behind a table... I reloaded my gun and they hear me reloading my gun, and they come back into the room and then I'm like, s**t, and I jump out the window."

The Influence of Bungie on Naughty Dog

The decision to scrap the multiplayer project was also influenced by outside expertise. Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida told Sacred Symbols+ that feedback from Sony-owned developer Bungie helped convince Naughty Dog to pivot.

Yoshida noted that Bungie explained the intense reality of managing live service games. This insight led Naughty Dog to realize they could not sustain a multiplayer title without sacrificing their single-player legacy.

While the multiplayer experiment ended, the franchise continues to expand. HBO's The Last of Us television series is currently filming its third season, and fans remain eager for any news regarding The Last of Us 3.
